Transcript: Here is a tip for a quick and easy dessert. Once a year we have Apple Day and we make applesauce and apple pies and apple crisp and we put them all into the freezer. What we do for Apple Pie Day is to make our Apple Pie right in the shell. For an Apple Pie, I like to make the whole pie right in the dough and freeze the whole thing. That way at Thanksgiving all I have to do is pull it out and bake it from frozen.
I have filled my shell with apples, now I am going to sprinkle a little flour, sugar and cinnamon on there. Then we are going to top it. Here is a trick that I learned a long time ago, put some fresh lemon zest on top of your apple pie before you bake it and it really brings out the freshness of the apples.
Now I am just going to crimp down the edges and seal the two crusts together, I like to use the pie dough that are pre-made in the refrigerator. It is really simple and it tastes almost as good as homemade. Okay, the Apple Pie is all done and I am just going to cut a couple of slits in the top, that’s to let the steam come out in your pie. I am going to wrap it with Saran wrap and then I am going to wrap it with really heavy duty aluminum freezer foil and then put it in my freezer. I will pull it out on Thanksgiving when I am ready to bake it.
I like to bake my pies on a pie plate or a cookie sheet because they always tend to spill over in the oven.
